Orioles’ Heston Kjerstad placed on 7-day concussion list following head injury

The Baltimore Orioles made a move to place outfielder Heston Kjerstad on the seven-day concussion injured list after he was hit in the helmet by a pitch. Originally scheduled to start against the New York Yankees on Saturday, Kjerstad was replaced in the lineup just before the game. The Orioles then announced his placement on the IL and called up outfielder Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk to fill the roster spot.
With a few games remaining before the All-Star break, the Orioles also sent starting pitcher Cade Povich to Norfolk and added right-hander Vinny Nottoli to the roster from Norfolk.
The Yankees responded by putting catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day IL due to a left quad strain and bringing up catcher Carlos Narváez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Kjerstad was struck near the ear flap by a 97 mph pitch thrown by New York’s Clay Holmes in the ninth inning of Friday’s game, which led to a brief confrontation as both benches cleared. The Yankees managed to secure a 4-1 victory in the end.
New York manager Aaron Boone mentioned a post-game discussion with Orioles manager Brandon Hyde that he described as “fine.”
