Biden’s understated physician gains attention following the president’s debate performance

As the personal physician to President Joe Biden, Dr. Kevin O’Connor is a familiar figure at the White House but largely unknown outside of its walls. Following concerns about President Biden’s performance during a recent debate, questions about his physical and mental capabilities for a second term have put Dr. O’Connor in the spotlight.

Just before the debate mishap, in February, Dr. O’Connor conducted President Biden’s most recent physical examination and stated in a public memo that Biden was fit for duty with no restrictions. This assessment from Dr. O’Connor remains upheld by the White House.

Republican lawmakers are now requesting Dr. O’Connor to appear before Congress to address queries about President Biden’s health and medical treatment, including why cognitive testing hasn’t been pursued. The presence of a neurologist, Dr. Kevin Cannard, who has seen President Biden, was clarified by Dr. O’Connor as part of routine evaluations during physical exams.

Dr. O’Connor and President Biden share a close relationship dating back over a decade, having worked together since Biden’s time as Vice President. Despite retiring after serving with Biden and Obama, Dr. O’Connor was brought back to the White House by President Biden in 2021.

While Dr. O’Connor typically operates behind the scenes, some House Republicans are attempting to bring attention to him, with Rep. James Comer requesting an interview to discuss President Biden’s health assessment. Allegations of ties to Biden family businesses and their potential influence on his medical judgment have been raised.

Dr. O’Connor, an osteopathic doctor with a background in military service, notably serving with the Army’s Delta Force, now plays a prominent role in the Biden administration. His vast experience includes combat operations post-9/11 and teaching at George Washington University’s medical school.

Despite the recent spotlight and scrutiny, the White House has dismissed requests for interviews with Dr. O’Connor as unwarranted and baseless. The physician continues to provide care and support to President Biden, carrying out his duties as the chief medical advisor with dedication and expertise.
