Intense Israeli bombing in Gaza City forces closure of medical facilities and prompts mass exodus

Heavy Israeli airstrikes have hit Gaza City on Tuesday, causing chaos as thousands of Palestinians flee in search of shelter. The bombardment is part of Israel’s new ground assault in the north of the territory, targeting areas where Hamas militants are regrouping. The ongoing fighting has left Gaza City and its surrounding urban areas devastated after months of conflict.

Hakeem Abdel-Bar, a resident who fled the Tuffah district in Gaza City, described the intense fighting with Israeli warplanes, drones, and tanks targeting central districts. Ambulances struggle to reach those in need due to the dangerous conditions caused by the Israeli operations, according to Nebal Farsakh, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Following Israel’s call for an evacuation from eastern and central parts of Gaza City, hospitals like Al-Ahli and the Patients Friends Association were forced to shut down, moving patients to safety. The Israeli military stated that hospitals did not need to evacuate, but past experiences have led medical facilities to preemptively close to safeguard patients from potential military actions.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with only 13 out of 36 hospitals partially functioning, as reported by the United Nations. The conflict, sparked by Hamas’ attack on October 7, has resulted in more than 5% of Gaza’s population being killed or wounded, with the majority forced to flee their homes. The campaign has left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced, many residing in overcrowded tent camps.

Israeli airstrikes on Deir al-Balah and nearby refugee camps have led to further casualties, including children and women. The Israeli military claims intelligence showing militant groups regrouping in central Gaza City, leading to targeted strikes. Hamas warns that the raids could jeopardize negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release.

Efforts to reach a truce between Israel and Hamas have been ongoing, with mediators from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar involved in the discussions. However, significant hurdles remain, with both sides having differing demands regarding the terms of a potential agreement. Hamas insists on a guaranteed permanent cease-fire, while Israel is wary of ending the conflict without neutralizing Hamas’ capabilities.

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on both sides, with casualties mounting on a daily basis. The situation in Gaza remains precarious, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. Peace negotiations continue amidst the ongoing violence, with hopes for a resolution becoming increasingly uncertain.
