Unstoppable, at least with his Republican Party: Trump demolishes rivals in political home run

Could the Republican primaries be nearing an early conclusion, just eight days into the race? The top favorite, Donald Trump, seems poised to solidify his lead in the internal party race for the Republican presidential nomination in Tuesday’s primaries in New Hampshire.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, described as Trump’s only remaining rival, faces a formidable challenge, described as her “last chance” to make a significant impact. A political miracle would be required for her to overcome Trump’s dominance, and the prospect of success in the Granite State, as well as in other U.S. states, appears slim.

Haley’s survival in this political duel hinges on a win or a very close second-place finish in New Hampshire. However, recent polls indicate that both scenarios are highly unlikely. The Boston Globe and Suffolk University polls show Trump leading Haley by a substantial margin of 19 points, with 55% to 36% support.

While earlier polls suggested a closer race, Trump has gained momentum following his triumph in Iowa, where he was 30 percent ahead of his closest rival. Trump has also intensified his attacks against Haley, hurting her chances to catch up.

The withdrawal of the previously strong challenger, Ron DeSantis, over the weekend has further diminished the field of Trump rivals. Despite Haley’s attempts to raise the temperature in her campaign by questioning Trump’s mental capacity, it appears to have backfired. She, like other challengers, has grappled with the Republican dilemma of facing Trump’s powerful base, as his loyal MAGA supporters remain steadfastly committed to their idol.

Paradoxically, Trump’s legal troubles, marked by court cases almost every other week, have strengthened him politically, with his base rallying around their idol. This puts Trump in a position to practically be able to practically secure the nomination after just two contests.

With the inner party competitors demolished by Trump, his focus will turn to the battle for the White House against current President Joe Biden. Early discussions about Trump’s choice of a running mate, typically reserved for early summer in presidential election years, are already surfacing.
