Zelensky Responds to Trump-Putin Call: ‘Waiting for More Information’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown openness to a temporary ceasefire with Russia pending additional information. Zelensky’s initial response was to consult with U.S. President Donald Trump before reaching a final verdict. While Zelensky has consistently supported peace efforts, he emphasizes the importance of grasping all aspects before committing.

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in a lengthy phone conversation where they reached an agreement on a 30-day ceasefire focused on energy and infrastructure. This agreement entails Russia halting attacks on Ukraine’s power plants and other critical services. The White House affirmed that discussions for a permanent peace deal are on the horizon. Nonetheless, Putin has set conditions that could complicate the process.

Zelensky has stressed that he will not agree to the ceasefire until he confers with Trump. Ukraine advocates for peace but requires full understanding of the plan. Zelensky expressed his anticipation of engaging in a dialogue with President Trump to gain clarity. Furthermore, Ukraine aims for assurances that Russia will also abide by the terms. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed the developments in the peace process, supported by a Downing Street spokesperson who backs efforts toward a lasting peace. There are concerns that a temporary ceasefire may provide Russia with an opportunity to regroup and rearm.

While discussions about a ceasefire persist, both Ukraine and Russia continue to target crucial infrastructure. Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s power plants have led to widespread blackouts, affecting heating, water supply, and public services. Simultaneously, Ukraine has conducted drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and fuel depots, impacting a significant portion of Russia’s refining capacity since February.

Putin has presented his conditions for ending the conflict, demanding that the U.S. and its allies cease sending military aid and intelligence to Ukraine for political negotiations. During their phone call, President Putin proposed an international ice hockey match between U.S. and Russian teams, an idea reportedly endorsed by President Trump. Zelensky insists that Europe should be included in the peace talks, arguing that decisions regarding Ukraine’s security necessitate the involvement of European nations. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant remains a significant concern in the conflict, with Russia having seized control early on. The plant’s capture has raised worries about a potential nuclear disaster given its proximity to the frontlines and the halt in power supply since its capture. Ukraine is eager to regain control of the plant, but Russia shows no indication of relinquishing it.
