Zeke Mayo shares racist messages post Texas Tech defeat

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas guard Zeke Mayo revealed screenshots of offensive and racially charged messages he received after his performance during a narrow defeat to No. 10 Texas Tech.
Mayo posted the images of these hostile messages on Saturday, but by Sunday morning, his account on X had been deactivated.
“I completely understand deserving criticism,” he expressed in his post. “My performance was utterly disappointing today, and it’s been like that for some time. I can’t be flawless all the time. I apologize to our fans and my teammates, and I promise to improve.”
In the game, Mayo missed a critical 3-point shot that could have tied the score in the last moments, scoring just five points on poor shooting figures of 1-for-7, marking a rare home loss for Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.
Kansas Coach Bill Self and Athletic Director Travis Goff quickly condemned these hurtful posts and offered words of encouragement and support for Mayo.
“These people aren’t true Jayhawks. They do not represent us,” Goff stated. “Their actions are fueled by gambling and hatred. They’ve never experienced the competitive spirit. To Zeke and all our players — the Jayhawk family stands by you steadfastly through every challenge.”
Coach Self added, “Any critique of the team should be aimed at me. I’m the person in charge as head coach.”
Mayo is new to the Jayhawk team after spending three years playing at South Dakota State and is currently the team’s second-leading scorer this season, averaging 14 points per game.
