Yankees’ Rookie Luis Gil Begins Season Injured

Yankees right-handed pitcher Luis Gil is set to miss the beginning of the season due to a high-grade lat strain in his pitching shoulder, which will prevent him from throwing for a minimum of six weeks.

The announcement regarding the injury was made by team manager Aaron Boone before the Yankees’ spring training matchup with Pittsburgh on Monday night.

“It’s going to be at least six weeks without throwing. We are certain of that,” Boone stated.

He did express hope that Gil will be able to return before the season concludes.
“They still need to further evaluate him and seek other opinions, but right now it’s looking like a six-week period without throwing,” Boone mentioned.

Gil, who is 26 years old, had to cut his bullpen session short last Friday. In the previous year, he achieved a record of 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts, amassing 171 strikeouts and registering a high of 77 walks over 151 2/3 innings pitched.

He was expected to be a key component of a starting rotation that would feature Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt. In light of Gil’s injury, Marcus Stroman is anticipated to be the top candidate to step in and fill his spot in the rotation.
