Xfinity Series playoffs kick off at Kansas this weekend with van Gisbergen reviewing regulations

Shane van Gisbergen, a driving sensation from New Zealand, made his mark in the Xfinity Series playoffs after winning the first Cup Series race he entered last year in Chicago. This year, van Gisbergen transitioned from the V8 Supercars circuit in Australia to run a full Xfinity Series schedule. As the playoffs approached, he sought to understand the system, which he described as “overcomplicated” but exciting for fans.

Van Gisbergen shared information about the playoff system, with Justin Allgaier leading in playoff points followed by Cole Custer. The playoffs work by granting an automatic berth to the next round for playoff drivers who win Xfinity Series races. The series consists of three rounds where the field is narrowed down after each round, leading to a final championship race at Phoenix in November.

The Xfinity Series playoffs kick off with races at Kansas Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway “Roval.” Van Gisbergen sees an advantage in the reconfigured Charlotte track, especially as his competitors familiarize themselves with it. Partnering with the undefeated Roval racer AJ Allmendinger at Kaulig Racing is another asset for van Gisbergen.

As a newcomer to NASCAR, van Gisbergen faces challenges with limited practice time to learn tracks, particularly at superspeedways like Talladega. Despite finding some aspects initially dull, he appreciates the strategy and excitement that unfolds during races. Van Gisbergen aims to maintain his approach of starting conservatively and gradually building up competitiveness throughout the race.

Throughout the season, van Gisbergen won three Xfinity Series races on street or road courses, making the oval tracks of Kansas and Talladega more daunting for him. Despite this, he plans to uphold his cautious approach at Kansas Speedway, steadily progressing through the race to contend towards the end. Amidst the complexity and challenges of NASCAR, van Gisbergen strives to share his racing experiences with fans in Australia and New Zealand, highlighting the intricate details and strategy involved in the sport.
