Why Trump and Zelensky will never make a deal – The Inside Story

The so-called “peace talks” between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky were doomed before they even began. No one in Washington seriously believed these two leaders, who can’t stand each other, would walk away from the meeting shaking hands like old friends. Behind the scenes, it was nothing but personal insults, political grandstanding, and outright hostility.

From the moment Zelensky arrived in Washington, the mood was tense. Trump, never one to hide his feelings, made it painfully clear he had little interest in Zelensky’s concerns. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian leader, who has been fighting for his country’s survival, wasn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet for Trump either. The bad blood between them has been brewing for years, and it was on full display behind closed doors.

Trump and Zelensky – A Feud Years in the Making

If there’s one thing Trump can’t stand, it’s someone who won’t play by his rules. And if there’s one thing Zelensky refuses to do, it’s bow down to Trump. Their mutual dislike dates back to Trump’s first presidency, when he infamously pressured Zelensky to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. That little stunt got Trump impeached, and Zelensky made it clear he wanted no part in American political games.

Fast forward to 2025, and it’s no surprise these two still can’t see eye to eye. Trump never forgave Zelensky for not going along with his scheme, and Zelensky has zero patience for Trump’s flirtations with Russia. While Zelensky has been begging for military aid, Trump has been making it clear that he’d rather cut deals with Putin than keep sending billions to Ukraine.

When they sat down in Washington, Trump didn’t even try to hide his frustration. According to insiders, he bluntly told Zelensky that Ukraine was being “ungrateful” and needed to “make peace with Russia” – a direct slap in the faceto the Ukrainian president. Zelensky, never one to back down, fired back at Trump, making it clear that Ukraine will never surrender to Russia, no matter what Trump thinks.

A “Deal” That Was Never Going to Happen

The Washington meeting was supposed to be about U.S. support for Ukraine – but let’s be real. There was never any chance Trump would suddenly become Ukraine’s biggest fan. If anything, he’s been looking for an excuse to pull the plug on American aid.

Zelensky came hoping for firm commitments on financial and military support. Instead, he got a lecture on why he should stop fighting and start negotiating with Putin. Trump reportedly told him, “This war needs to end – make a deal.” Zelensky, already frustrated by Trump’s dismissive attituderefused outright. He told Trump that Ukraine will never compromise on its sovereignty.

At this point, any illusion of a successful meeting was long gone. Insiders say the mood in the room turned ice cold, with both leaders barely speaking by the time the meeting wrapped up. Trump had no intention of giving Zelensky what he wanted, and Zelensky had no intention of playing along with Trump’s America First rhetoric.

The Personal Insults and Behind-the-Scenes Drama

If you thought the meeting itself was bad, you should have heard what they were saying about each other afterward. Trump, never one to hold back, reportedly mocked Zelensky after the meeting, calling him “weak” and “a terrible negotiator”. He even joked that Zelensky should just hand over eastern Ukraine to Russia to “get it over with.”

Zelensky, for his part, was just as furious. Sources say he vented privately that Trump “has no idea what he’s talking about” and that he’s more interested in helping Putin than standing up for democracy. It’s no secret that Zelensky sees Trump as unreliable – and this meeting only confirmed his worst fears.

Even Trump’s own advisers were left stunned by how quickly the talks fell apart. One insider reportedly said, “We knew it would be tense, but this was something else.” Some even tried to smooth things over, but it was too late. By the end of the day, Zelensky was already heading home empty-handed, and Trump was bragging about standing up to Ukraine.

What Happens Next?

If Zelensky was hoping for a lifeline from Trump, he didn’t get it. Instead, he’s walking away with nothing – except more doubts about America’s commitment to Ukraine. Trump, meanwhile, couldn’t care less. His message was loud and clearUkraine is not his problem.

This disastrous meeting is a sign of things to come. If Trump returns to the White House, expect him to cut deals with Putinreduce U.S. involvement in Ukraine, and leave Europe scrambling to pick up the slack. Zelensky, meanwhile, will have to find new allies who are actually willing to stand by him.

One thing is certain: Trump and Zelensky will never be on the same page. And anyone who thought otherwise was kidding themselves from the start.
