What do we know about the attacker–and his possible motives?

A devastating attack unfolded in New Orleans when a driver plowed into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was killed in a shootout with police after exiting the vehicle and opening fire. Two officers sustained injuries but are in stable condition.

Intentional Carnage and Explosives Found

Witnesses reported that the attacker drove at high speed into the crowd, then emerged from the truck wearing body armor and armed with an assault rifle. Officials later discovered improvised explosive devices at the crash site that failed to detonate.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the incident as deliberate. “This man was hellbent on causing chaos and destruction,” she said, emphasizing that it was not a DUI-related incident but a planned attack.

FBI Investigates Terrorism Link

The FBI confirmed they are investigating the attack as an act of terrorism. However, conflicting statements arose, with Mayor LaToya Cantrell initially calling it a terrorist act, while FBI Special Agent Alethea Duncan stated it was not classified as such.

Mysterious Flagpole Fuels Speculation

Images of a flagpole attached to the suspect’s truck have circulated online, sparking questions. Early footage showed what appeared to be a black flag on the pole, while later photos revealed a metallic jacket wrapped around it. Authorities have not clarified its significance.

Chaos on Bourbon Street

The iconic street, known for its nightlife, was shut down as paramedics and investigators worked at the scene. Social media videos captured chilling moments of the attack, showing casualties on the ground and people fleeing as gunfire erupted.

The tragedy occurred during the final hours of New Year’s celebrations and just ahead of the AllState Bowl at the Caesars Superdome, an event expected to draw thousands. Residents and visitors have been urged to avoid the area as investigations continue.

A City in Mourning

New Orleans now grapples with the aftermath of this horrific attack, as investigators piece together the motives behind the chaos and the city mourns the loss of lives during what should have been a time of celebration.
