Weight restrictions to protect Wisconsin roads from heavy trucks

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is putting in place Class II weight restrictions for most of the stateโ€™s highways starting on Thursday, March 6. These restrictions will affect highways south of US 8, covering Zones 2 through 5. These new rules aim to protect the roads during the spring thaw when the ground is soft and more vulnerable to damage from heavy trucks.

Class II restrictions to protect roads from damage

Class II weight restrictions are designed to prevent damage to highways, especially during the spring thaw. When frost leaves the ground, the soil becomes soft. Heavy trucks can cause more harm to the roads in these conditions. About 1,400 miles of state highways are included in these restrictions. This will protect the roads from getting damaged during this sensitive time of the year.

When restrictions will begin in northern Wisconsin

In northern Wisconsin, restrictions will start on Monday, March 10, at 12:01 a.m. These restrictions will cover Zone 1. This is when the roads in the far northern parts of the state will also be affected. The goal is to prevent damage in areas that are more vulnerable to thawing earlier in the season.

Along with Class II restrictions, seasonal road restrictions will also go into effect across the state on Monday, March 10, at 12:01 a.m. This includes county highways, town roads, and streets in cities or villages. Local governments will make decisions about which roads need to be posted with weight limits. They may also decide when these restrictions should be lifted.

Local roads may also have weight limits

Itโ€™s important to note that local units of government will decide if weight restrictions apply to roads in their areas. County highways, town roads, and city or village streets may all be subject to these limits. This means some areas may have weight restrictions on their local roads even if they are not state highways.

Interactive map to help drivers find restricted roads

To make it easier for drivers, WisDOT has created an interactive map that shows where seasonal weight restrictions are in place. This map can be found on their website. It helps drivers plan their routes and avoid restricted roads.
