Vermont town struggles to keep up with flood repairs

The town of Lyndon, Vermont, recently faced severe flash floods twice last month. As residents gear up for the arrival of Tropical Storm Debby’s remnants on Friday, concerns arise regarding the town’s ability to keep pace with the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to climate change.
Municipal Administrator Justin Smith expressed the need for a three-week drought to catch up with recovery efforts in Lyndon. The town has been striving to repair the damages caused by the floods that destroyed bridges, homes, and roads in the area.
Following the recent flooding incidents in July, a flood watch has been issued for Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, fueling concerns about further property damage. The town is actively preparing for the incoming storm by clearing debris from roads, emptying culverts, and reinforcing areas prone to flooding with large rocks.
Despite ongoing road closures due to repair work, progress is being made, such as the installation of a temporary bridge to restore access for residents who had been cut off. However, challenges persist for residents like Jaqi Kincaid, who fear losing their home if another deluge hits the area.
The impact of the floods is also felt by businesses like Speedwell Farms, which incurred significant losses during the past week due to the inability to transport milk. The community is on edge with each new storm, uncertain about the extent of the damage it may bring and the strain it puts on limited resources.
As the town grapples with the aftermath of the recent floods and braces for the impending storm, the resilience of Lyndon’s residents and the dedication of local authorities to mitigate risks and enhance preparedness remain crucial in navigating the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
