US Surgeon General Warned by Mother to Stay Out of Politics, but Decided to Get Involved Anyway

MIAMI — Dr. Vivek Murthy, in his second term as the Surgeon General, has not shied away from addressing political issues, despite initial concerns from his family about him entering politics. His latest endeavors have included challenging tech companies for their impact on children’s mental health and declaring gun violence in America a public health crisis.

Republicans had previously been wary of Murthy’s stance on gun violence, which almost derailed his initial appointment during the Obama administration. However, under Biden, he was reconfirmed in 2021 with bipartisan support. Gun violence has become a focal point of Murthy’s current term, especially as it has become the leading cause of death for U.S. children in 2021.

Murthy’s determination to address gun violence stems from the heartbreaking stories he has encountered during his public engagements, such as a grandmother fearing for her grandson’s safety at school and a mother constantly on guard after surviving a mass shooting. His recent report on gun violence calls for legislative actions to curb the crisis, prompting mixed reactions from politicians and organizations.

Apart from gun violence, Murthy has also been dedicated to highlighting the mental health repercussions of such societal issues. Loneliness and its adverse effects have been a recurring theme in Murthy’s reports, indicating a shift towards a more comprehensive approach to public health under his leadership as Surgeon General. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated feelings of loneliness, emphasizing its detrimental impact on overall well-being.

Despite the polarizing nature of the topics he tackles, Murthy has received positive feedback within the medical and public health communities for his efforts. Beyond his tenure as Surgeon General, Murthy aspires to continue his work addressing mental health and loneliness, topics he believes are crucial to improving societal well-being.

Reflecting on his upbringing in Miami, Murthy credits his parents for instilling in him the value of human connection and community support. Family traditions of togetherness and compassion have shaped his outlook on public health, reinforcing the belief that human relationships are essential to overall wellness. As he contemplates his future beyond his current role, Murthy remains committed to advocating for mental health awareness and combating loneliness.
