Northeast US expected to receive nearly a foot of snow from winter storm

CONCORD, N.H. — A robust storm system is set to deliver significant snowfall to various areas of the Upper Great Lakes this Saturday, with conditions expected to worsen overnight across the Northeast region.

According to the National Weather Service, a weather system originating in the central and southern plains will track northeastward throughout Saturday. This movement will generate between 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of snow across select regions of Minnesota and the Great Lakes area. As the storm reaches upstate New York and New England overnight into Sunday, snowfall totals could potentially reach a foot (30 centimeters), raising the likelihood of hazardous travel due to reduced visibility and snow-laden roads.

Bob Oravec, a lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland, noted, “One positive aspect of this storm is its relatively quick progression, which means it won’t result in an extended winter weather situation.” He indicated that snowfall is expected to taper off early in the day on Sunday, leading to more stable weather conditions for several days afterward.

Meanwhile, a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain stretching from the Ohio Valley to the northern Mid-Atlantic could create hazardous conditions due to ice accumulation in the Central Appalachians. The freezing rain on roads poses a significant risk for travel, making conditions particularly dangerous, and the potential for power outages remains a concern as well.
