Kamala Harris has long been rumored to return to politics in her home state. Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited in 2026, and some suggest she’ll run for his seat. But Trump’s camp might stand in her way. Grenell, who previously ran for California governor in the 2021 recall election, says he won’t back down.
“If Kamala Harris runs for governor, her baggage will be too much,” Grenell told reporters from Munich. “With the right messaging, a Republican could actually win.”
Despite a rocky national campaign, Harris is still popular in California. Internal polling shows her leading the pack if she runs for governor. But it’s not all smooth sailing. Billionaire Rick Caruso, who lost a tight race for Los Angeles mayor in 2022, is eyeing a potential run. Caruso may have an edge, especially after the state’s mishandling of the wildfires, which hurt Democrats like Rep. Karen Bass.
“If Kamala gets in, it’s hers to lose,” a political consultant said. “Her record in California is strong, and voters know her name.”
Though she’s popular in California, many wonder if Harris will run for governor. Some see it as a step backward in her political career. After all, she was once the second-in-command of the United States. Going back to California for a state office might not be the ideal move.
However, history has shown this path can work. Richard Nixon, after losing the 1960 presidential election, ran for California governor in 1962 and lost. But he came back strong in 1968, winning the presidency.
Insiders believe Harris may have her eyes on 2028. Despite her loss in 2024 to Trump, she’s still a heavy hitter. A January McLaughlin poll shows Harris leading the Democratic pack with 33%, way ahead of rivals like Pete Buttigieg (9%) and Newsom (7%).
Grenell may not have extensive political experience in California, but he’s not a rookie. He worked as a spokesman for former San Diego Mayor Susan Goldin and has advised San Diego City Council candidates. His growing influence could make him a key player in the state’s political future.
Behind the scenes, Trump and his allies are setting the stage for another clash with Harris. Grenell’s rise in California politics is just one part of the puzzle. Could he be the man to stop Harris from taking over the state? Only time will tell. But one thing is clear: Trump’s team is ready for whatever comes next.
