Trump supports Musk or Ellison buying TikTok, wants US profit share

Former US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Tesla and X owner Elon Musk purchasing TikTok.

The popular app was recently banned in the US over national security concerns tied to its Chinese ownership, leaving over 170 million American users without access.

TikTok Ban and Temporary Reprieve

The ban, which took effect Sunday, led to TikTok being removed from Apple and Google app stores to comply with federal rules. On his first day back in office, Trump signed an order granting a 75-day delay, allowing TikTok to resume operations temporarily.

While addressing reporters, Trump proposed that the US should receive 50% of any revenue generated from a potential sale of TikTok in a joint business deal.

Trump Pushes for US-Owned TikTok

“I have met with the big owners of TikTok,” Trump stated. “What I’m thinking is: someone should buy it and give half of the proceeds to the United States.”

He also issued a stern warning to China against obstructing the sale, threatening tariffs of up to 100% if any interference occurred.

Elon Musk and Larry Ellison as Potential Buyers

When asked if he supported Musk buying TikTok, Trump said he was open to the idea and also named Larry Ellison, Oracle’s co-founder, as a potential buyer.

“I’d like Musk to buy it. I’d like Larry to buy it too,” Trump said. He emphasized the value TikTok would gain with US approval, suggesting that the platform could be worth “like a trillion dollars” with a permit.

Trump’s Vision for the Deal

“What I’m thinking is this,” Trump explained. “Buy it, give half to the United States, and we’ll give you a permit. Then you’ll have a great partner in the US, making TikTok more valuable because of the partnership.”

Trump’s comments highlight his intention to leverage the platform’s sale to benefit the US financially while addressing security concerns. The prospect of a Musk or Ellison acquisition has added new intrigue to the unfolding TikTok saga.
