Donald Trump is riding high on approval ratings as he kicks off his second term. A new CBS News/YouGov poll shows that 53% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s performance so far. This marks one of his best job approval scores in over a decade in politics.
Voters describe Trump as “effective,” “focused,” “competent,” and “energetic.” However, only 37% think of him as “compassionate.” Still, a strong majority, 70%, believe he’s staying true to his promises from the 2024 campaign.
Trump’s numbers in this CBS poll are higher than in previous surveys. His early second-term approval surpasses ratings from his first term in 2017. This suggests a strong start to his presidency.
Despite positive ratings, Trump is not without criticism. Issues like trade and inflation still worry voters. A significant 51% believe his policies will increase food and grocery prices, while only 28% think they’ll lower them.
Two-thirds of poll respondents believe the Trump administration isn’t doing enough to lower prices. Furthermore, 73% expect new tariffs on imported goods to raise prices, not lower them.
When it comes to job creation, Trump’s tariff strategy doesn’t seem to be winning over voters. Only 32% think tariffs will create jobs, while 34% predict job losses. The rest expect no change at all.
Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. While he paused duties on Canada and Mexico, the poll shows strong opposition to these tariffs from the public. However, 56% support new tariffs on China, a key issue in Trump’s trade war.
Trump’s decision to issue pardons for those involved in the January 6 riot has also drawn backlash. A majority, 58%, disapprove of these pardons. This issue remains one of the more contentious points of his early second-term actions.
Trump’s stance on immigration is a rare bright spot. His efforts to deport undocumented immigrants have a 59% approval rating. Additionally, 64% support his plan to send U.S. troops to the southern border to curb illegal immigration.
Trump’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict is also drawing approval. 54% back his approach, though the stance has sparked strong opposition among Democrats and liberals.
On the government efficiency front, the public is divided. Opinions on the influence of Elon Musk’s task force to cut federal bureaucracy are mixed. Still, many believe the administration is making the right moves in reducing government spending, U.S. foreign aid, and ending diversity programs.
Trump’s early approval marks a promising start to his second term. While some policies, like tariffs and pardons, face criticism, his strong stances on immigration and government efficiency continue to win support. Whether these trends will last remains to be seen, but for now, Trump is enjoying a solid wave of approval.
