Trump wants to buy Canada, Greenland to make America bigger

President-elect Donald Trump has made his most ambitious territorial proposal yet, suggesting that Canada become the 51st U.S. state in exchange for a 60% tax cut for its citizens.

This bold statement comes amid Trump’s recent declarations of interest in expanding U.S. territory to include Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal.

Trump’s Christmas Day Proposal to Canada

On Christmas Day, Trump took to Truth Social, targeting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with a provocative message.

“Also, to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, whose citizens’ taxes are far too high—if Canada were to become our 51st state, their taxes would be cut by more than 60%, their businesses would double in size, and they would be protected militarily like no other country in the world,” Trump wrote.

Accompanying his post was an image of Trump superimposed on a Canadian mountaintop, surveying the land alongside a Canadian flag.

Trudeau Responds to Annexation Rumors

Prime Minister Trudeau dismissed the annexation comments as jokes, stating during a recent meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago that the remarks were not serious. However, the meeting came amid Trump’s threats to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, creating tension between the two nations.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who also attended the dinner, echoed Trudeau’s sentiment, describing Trump’s comments as lighthearted teasing.

Greenland Back on Trump’s Radar

Trump also reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, calling it a matter of “national security and freedom throughout the world.” He announced PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as the new ambassador to Denmark, reigniting talks about Greenland.

Despite his enthusiasm, Danish officials quickly dismissed the idea, reiterating that while Greenland is “open for business,” it is “not for sale.”

A Renewed Interest in the Panama Canal

Trump’s expansionist ambitions extend beyond the Arctic Circle. He has hinted at reclaiming control of the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of exploiting rising shipping costs.

In response, Panama President José Raúl Mulino firmly declared, “Every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to.” Trump, however, fired back on social media with the cryptic remark, “We’ll see about that!”

Trump’s Vision for U.S. Expansion

While many dismiss Trump’s proposals as hyperbole, his bold claims have sparked debate over the practicality and legality of such territorial expansions. Whether intended as serious policy or political theater, these declarations highlight Trump’s willingness to challenge global norms and redefine the U.S.’s role on the world stage.

As his inauguration approaches, Trump’s territorial ambitions add yet another layer of unpredictability to his administration’s forthcoming policies.
