Trump Impeachment Resolution Sparks House Clash
A House Democrat has reignited the Trump impeachment debate by forcing a chamber-wide vote on President Donald Trumpโs conduct.
Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., filed a privileged resolution on Tuesday, requiring House leaders to bring it up within two legislative days. The move sets up a politically charged showdown.
Democrats Divided as Trump Impeachment Vote Nears
Thanedarโs seven articles accuse Trump of obstructing justice, abusing trade powers, accepting bribes, and undermining constitutional principles. โDonald Trump has unlawfully conducted himself,โ Thanedar said. โHe brought shame to the presidency.โ
However, some Democrats want nothing to do with the measure. Four lawmakers initially listed as co-sponsors removed their names, indicating discomfort with the strategy.
The Trump impeachment push puts vulnerable members in a tight spot ahead of the 2026 midterms.
GOP Moves Quickly to Kill the Resolution
Republican leaders intend to table the resolution. Doing so would eliminate the need for a full House vote on the articles themselves.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La, has not publicly responded yet, but GOP insiders say leadership wants to end the effort swiftly and decisively.
The Trump impeachment vote is expected to fail along party lines, with Republicans unanimously opposed and Democrats split.
Political Risks for Democrats Grow
Democrats are still trying to regain their footing after the 2024 election loss. Thanedarโs resolution adds friction to their messaging strategy.
Some worry the Trump impeachment focus could alienate moderate voters and energize Trumpโs base. Vulnerable Democrats must now decide between supporting the effort or distancing themselves from it.
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who previously threatened his own impeachment articles, was recently ejected from Trumpโs joint session speech for protesting mid-address.
Thanedar Stands Alone Against Trump
Despite the political fallout, Thanedar remains firm. He previously introduced similar articles in April but failed to gain momentum. This time, he criticized the Department of Government Efficiency, calling it โflagrantly unconstitutional.โ
โThe Constitution doesnโt permit unchecked power,โ he said. โWe must act, even if others stay silent.โ
Although unlikely to succeed, the Trump impeachment resolution has stirred debate across the Capitol โ and reminded both parties that the battle over Trumpโs legacy is far from over.
