Musk’s D.C. Chapter Closes

President Donald Trump stood beside Elon Musk on Friday, officially closing the chapter on one of Washington’s most polarizing tenures. Musk, now stepping down as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, is heading back to private business. His portfolio includes Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media site X.

In a brief ceremony at the Oval Office, Trump applauded Musk for creating “a colossal change in the old ways of doing business.” Musk accepted a symbolic key to the agency while wearing a black outfit with a cheeky “The Dogefather” shirt.

Praises and Warnings

Musk, never shy about style or statement, nodded as Trump listed achievements. These included billions in contracts slashed and layers of bureaucracy dismantled. “I think the DOGE team is doing an incredible job,” Musk said. “They’re going to continue to be doing an incredible job.”

However, his legacy is complicated. While Trump celebrated the chaos as progress, critics warned of deep scars. Entire divisions were gutted, and the effects went global. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was effectively dismantled.

Fallout from Government Cuts

Boston University researchers estimate hundreds of thousands may have died due to aid withdrawals linked to Musk’s reforms. Programs in food, medicine, and education vanished in some of the world’s poorest nations.

Yet Musk didn’t hit the marks he set. Initially promising to cut $1–2 trillion from federal spending, his final projection dropped to $150 billion. Even that number remains fuzzy. The DOGE website reports $175 billion in cuts, but watchdogs say it’s full of inflated claims.

Trump’s Public Farewell

Despite the critiques, Trump declared Musk’s term “the most sweeping and consequential government reform effort in generations.” He added with a grin, “He’s really not leaving. He’ll be back and forth. Always keeping an eye on things.”

Trump later took to social media, writing: “Elon is terrific! This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way.”

More Than a Government Gig

Musk’s position was always intended to be temporary. As a special government employee, his work had a time limit. Still, Musk hinted he might have stayed “indefinitely” if Trump wanted him to.

Now, he returns to business, though his influence in D.C. seems far from over. He recently announced plans to scale back political donations, but he was Trump’s largest donor in last year’s race.

What’s Next for DOGE?

Asked about the future of the agency, Musk waved off concerns. “DOGE is a way of life,” he said. “Like Buddhism.” He believes the project can thrive without him and may even gain speed.

Whether DOGE grows or crumbles remains unclear. But one thing is certain: Musk made a mark no one can ignore.

For now, Washington exhales—briefly. Because where Elon Musk is concerned, no door ever stays shut for long.
