Trevi Fountain in Rome reopens following renovations just ahead of the Jubilee Holy Year

ROME — The renowned Trevi Fountain in Rome has officially reopened after undergoing three months of renovation, coinciding perfectly with the upcoming celebration of the 2025 Jubilee Holy Year, which is anticipated to attract a large influx of tourists.

This extensive restoration of the 18th-century landmark, a major draw for visitors in the Italian capital, amounted to a cost of 327,000 euros (approximately $341,000).

In an effort to prevent overcrowding, the number of visitors permitted at any given time will be capped at 400. “This approach ensures that each visitor has sufficient time to admire the fountain and grasp the significance it represents,” remarked Claudio Parisi Presicce, the superintendent for cultural heritage in Rome.

To address the expected surge in attendance during the Jubilee festivities, officials in the city are developing a strategy to restrict access to the area surrounding the fountain.

Individuals wishing to visit the fountain will need to secure their tickets online and will be charged a fee of 2 euros (around $2.20) for entry. Once inside, each visitor will have a time limit of 30 minutes to soak in the beauty of the famous site.

Even while renovation work was taking place, visitors were able to partake in the classic coin-throwing ritual by using a temporary pool. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the Baroque-style fountain guarantees a return visit to Rome.

This time-honored custom contributes significantly to the local community, generating an estimated 1.5 million euros (about $1.6 million) each year, with these funds donated to Caritas, a Catholic charity, for the last 15 years.
