Trans Inmate Sues Trump $3.5M Over Alleged Rights Violations

  • A transgender inmate is suing Donald Trump, blaming his anti-trans rhetoric for violent assaults in an Indiana prison.
  • The lawsuit claims Trump’s policies and public statements encouraged both inmates and staff to harm and ignore her.
  • The case raises national debate about transgender rights, prison safety, and political accountability.

A transgender inmate serving time for killing a baby is suing Donald Trump for $3.5 million. She says his anti-trans views caused inmates to attack her in prison. Autumn Cordellionè, formerly known as Jonathan C. Richardson, filed the lawsuit on April 1. She claims Trump’s public statements against transgender rights created a dangerous prison environment.

Cordellionè says Trump’s language encouraged hate. In her handwritten lawsuit, she explains that other inmates raped and stabbed her. The attacks lasted four days. According to her, the inmates felt supported by Trump’s views. She says they mentioned him during the assaults. “Trump’s president now,” one said, “we won’t get in trouble for hurting you.” The lawsuit says this shows how political speech can lead to real-world violence.

Trump’s Policies on Transgender Inmates Under Fire

Cordellionè’s lawsuit brings new attention to Trump’s prison policies. During his time in office, Trump ordered federal prisons to house inmates based on their biological sex. That rule made it harder for transgender inmates to stay in safe housing. Some states followed that lead. Cordellionè had been in protective custody. After being moved to the general population, she says she was attacked. Her lawyers suggest that Trump’s order may have played a role in her transfer.

White House Defends Trump’s Gender Ideology Stance

When asked about the lawsuit, a White House spokesperson defended Trump. The statement said Trump “promised to defend biological women from gender ideology extremism.” Supporters say his policies aim to protect women’s rights. Critics argue those same policies put transgender people in danger. Cordellionè’s case is now at the center of that political fight.

Complaint Claims Prison Officials Shared Trump’s Views

Cordellionè also blames prison staff. She says they ignored her cries for help. Some even mocked her for being transgender. One staff member allegedly said taxpayers shouldn’t pay for her surgery. These claims suggest Trump’s anti-trans message influenced not just inmates but prison workers too. The lawsuit connects political speech to how officials treat vulnerable prisoners.

In her lawsuit, Cordellionè says her Eighth Amendment rights were violated. That amendment bans cruel and unusual punishment. She argues that being placed with violent inmates, while officials ignored the danger, breaks that law. Her legal team says the government is responsible because it helped create the harmful environment. This brings up big questions about how far political speech can go before it leads to legal consequences.

Case Highlights Larger Battle Over Gender and Government

This case isn’t just about one person. It’s part of a larger national debate. What rights do transgender prisoners have? Can political leaders be held responsible for violence caused by their words? Supporters of Trump say he’s protecting basic truths. But LGBTQ+ advocates say his words spread hate and endanger lives. The lawsuit could set a new standard for how courts handle those issues.

Trump’s Past Comments on Trans Issues Back in Spotlight

Trump has often spoken against what he calls “gender ideology.” He rolled back several protections for transgender people while in office. That includes healthcare access, school sports, and prison housing. His words have become a rallying cry for his base. But for critics, those same words are dangerous. This lawsuit adds to the list of legal and moral questions tied to his presidency.

Could This Lawsuit Change Future Policies?

If Cordellionè wins the case, it could lead to big changes. Lawmakers may rethink how they talk about gender issues. Prison officials may need to review how they house transgender inmates. Courts may also look closer at the link between speech and violence. For now, the case is drawing national attention. It raises the stakes in America’s ongoing political battle over gender identity and civil rights.
