Jamison Wagner, the suspect in a pair of firebombing attacksโincluding one targeting a Tesla showroomโwas hauled out of his New Mexico home shirtless after an early-morning FBI raid on Saturday. Agents stormed his residence and captured the 40-year-old wearing only a pair of shorts, ending weeks of investigation.
FBI Cracks Down on Tesla Firebombing and GOP Attack
The case stems from two recent attacks. On February 9, Wagner allegedly firebombed a Tesla showroom in Albuquerque, setting two vehicles ablaze and spray-painting the building and cars with graffiti, including swastikas and โDie Elon.โ Then on March 30, he reportedly targeted the Republican Party office in New Mexico, tagging it with โICE = KKKโ and damaging the entrance.
Authorities linked Wagner to the crimes after surveillance footage revealed a white 2015 Hyundai Accent, which matched his car. A search of his home revealed eight suspected incendiary devices and a stencil that matched the graffiti from the GOP office.
Suspect Faces Terror Charges for Tesla Firebombing
Wagner now faces two federal counts of malicious damage or destruction of property. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The Department of Justice stated that these acts are being treated as domestic terrorism, due to the political nature of the attacks and the use of violence to intimidate.
He is also a listed member of 500 Queer Scientists, an LGBT advocacy group, and is known to post activist content online. During the raid, FBI agents from a newly formed task force on Tesla-related violence led the operation with support from the ATF and the Counterterrorism Division.
Officials Warn of Surge in Political Violence
FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson credited the swift arrest to collaboration between federal and local law enforcement. โDirector Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi made it clear these attacks wouldnโt go unanswered,โ he told The Post.
Bondi echoed that stance Monday. โThere will be no deals. Weโre treating these acts as terrorism,โ she said in a statement. โYou cannot burn, bomb, or vandalize your way through disagreement. Crimes have consequences.โ
Tesla and GOP Targeted Amid Political Tensions
Wagnerโs graffiti made direct references to Elon Musk and the Tesla brand, referring to it as โTesla Nazi Inc.โ The GOP office attack came during heightened tensions between supporters and critics of Muskโs new government role.
While Tesla has faced protests in the past, law enforcement says this marks the most violent escalation yet. The FBIโs dedicated task force, announced last month, was formed specifically to stop attacks on Tesla sites nationwide.
Officials confirmed Wagner will remain in custody until trial and will not be offered a plea deal. The DOJ aims to use this case as a deterrent against future politically motivated attacks.
