The New Year’s Eve celebration in New Orleans turned tragic when a driver plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 10 and injuring 30.
The suspect, who also fired at pedestrians and police after the collision, was killed in a shootout with law enforcement.
The suspect drove a rented Ford electric vehicle into the crowd at high speed around 3:15 a.m. Witnesses claim he wore body armor and was armed with an assault rifle. Authorities found an improvised explosive device (IED) at the scene, later detonated by a bomb squad. Photos of a flagpole with a jacket or black flag attached to the truck have sparked speculation, with investigators exploring possible links to ISIS.
The FBI confirmed it is treating the incident as an act of terrorism. Mayor LaToya Cantrell and federal agents are coordinating efforts to uncover the suspect’s motives and connections. The truck, rented through Turo, had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border two days prior, raising additional concerns about its use in the attack.
Witnesses described a horrifying scene as the vehicle mowed down pedestrians. “It was slamming into everyone on the sidewalk,” said Kevin Garcia, who narrowly avoided injury. Another witness recalled gunfire and people running in panic, likening it to an active shooter drill. Videos from the scene showed casualties on the ground amid the chaos.
President-elect Donald Trump and President Joe Biden both issued statements condemning the attack. Trump pledged full federal support to New Orleans, while Biden assured resources for the investigation and expressed sympathy for the victims. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry called the act “horrific” and urged prayers for the victims and first responders.
The attack, occurring hours before the AllState Bowl at the Caesars Superdome, has left the city shaken. Bourbon Street, a renowned tourist destination, remains shut down as authorities continue their investigation into the motives behind this deadly act.
