Taylor vs. Serrano trilogy set for MSG boxing event

NEW YORK — Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are set to clash once more in a highly anticipated boxing match at Madison Square Garden, bringing their thrilling rivalry to the forefront in the third installment of their trilogy.

The bout, scheduled for July 11, will be for Taylor’s undisputed super lightweight championship title and will be available for streaming on Netflix, as announced by Most Valuable Promotions on Thursday.

In their previous encounters, Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) narrowly defeated Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs), beginning with a split-decision win on April 30, 2022. The electrifying fight was held in a packed arena with 19,187 attendees and was awarded fight of the year honors.

Originally, a rematch was planned to take place in Taylor’s home country of Ireland. However, it instead occurred in November at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, where Taylor emerged victorious with a unanimous decision on the undercard of Jake Paul’s fight.

Reflecting on their heated rivalry, Taylor commented, “I’m 2-0 against Amanda, but it’s a very special rivalry that always delivers in the ring. It’s fitting for us to have the trilogy.” She expressed excitement about returning to Madison Square Garden, where both fighters had significant fan support, stating, “The atmosphere for the first fight was incredible, and I expect nothing less this time.”

The upcoming match will highlight the first all-women’s boxing card at the iconic venue, with the previous audience split evenly between Taylor’s Irish supporters and Serrano’s Puerto Rican fans.

The fight will continue in the standard format of two-minute rounds typical for women’s boxing. Though a seven-division champion, Serrano has advocated for three-minute rounds and even vacated one of her featherweight titles to pursue this change. She stated that Taylor was not in favor of this modification.

“This is a record-setting payday for both of us, and it’s important to honor the handshake deal we made. She didn’t,” Serrano remarked. “But every bout we have is a battle, and come July 11, I plan to claim the victory I deserve.”
