In Denver, law enforcement suspects a woman is behind a series of vandalism incidents targeting a Tesla dealership in Colorado. The offenses include throwing Molotov cocktails at cars, spray painting phrases such as “Nazi cars” on the building, and messages seemingly directed at Elon Musk. The suspect, Lucy Grace Nelson, was apprehended on Monday in Loveland after apparently returning to the dealership armed with more incendiary devices and vandalism supplies, according to police reports. The underlying motive for her alleged actions is still under investigation, as confirmed by Chris Padgett, a spokesperson from the police department.
This case arises amid increasing anxieties surrounding Musk’s influence on President Donald Trump’s administration, concerns shared by some Republicans and Democrats alike. Nelson faces state charges for deploying incendiary devices or explosives during a felony, criminal mischief, and attempted felony connected to Monday’s incidents. However, authorities are also collaborating with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, suggesting forthcoming federal charges.
After posting bond, Nelson was released from jail on Tuesday. She has not responded to a telephone message as of Wednesday. The arrest affidavit presents evidence against Nelson and hints at a possible accomplice, as surveillance footage from one of the six vandalism incidents since January 29 reveals a suspect with a smaller build. Nevertheless, Nelson has been identified as the person present in other occurrences.
Padgett stated that the investigation into potential accomplices is ongoing, although sensitive details are withheld due to the federal nature of the probe. Reportedly, one incident included an obscenity directed at Musk spray painted at the site before a security guard intervened. Video evidence shows Molotov cocktails being hurled at several Tesla sedans, causing damage to at least four vehicles valued at a total of $220,000. These incendiary devices were reportedly made from empty liquor bottles.
When Nelson was taken into custody, police discovered spray paint cans, gasoline, bottles, and cloth pieces soaked with accelerants inside her vehicle. A representative from the Loveland Tesla dealership chose not to comment, and Tesla has not responded to inquiries via email.
