Stop & Shop to shut down 32 unprofitable grocery stores in the Northeast

Stop & Shop announced on Friday its plan to shut down 32 underperforming grocery stores across the Northeastern United States by the end of the year. These closures are part of a strategic move by the supermarket chain, which is a subsidiary of the Dutch company Ahold Delhaize.

According to Stop & Shop, the closures will affect various states, with 10 stores closing in New Jersey, eight in Massachusetts, seven in New York, five in Connecticut, and two in Rhode Island. While the company did not disclose the exact number of employees at these locations, affected staff members will be given the opportunity to transition to other positions within the company.

Gordon Reid, the president of Stop & Shop, stated that the decision to close these stores was made to establish a strong foundation for the brand’s future growth. Stop & Shop, which first began its operations in 1914 in Somerville, Massachusetts, currently runs approximately 400 grocery stores and employs around 60,000 individuals.
