Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson’s availability for the opener in Atlanta is uncertain due to a calf injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers faced uncertainty in their quarterback situation ahead of their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Initially naming Russell Wilson as the starter, the team later listed him as “questionable” for Week 1 due to an aggravated calf injury he sustained in practice. This development could potentially pave the way for Justin Fields to start against the Falcons.

Both Wilson and Fields are preparing as if they will play, with Wilson mentioning that he is focusing on getting his body ready while receiving treatment for his calf injury. Despite experiencing limitations in practice before and finding ways to play on game day in the past, Wilson acknowledges the challenges of adjusting to a new team and offensive coordinator.

While Wilson was favored to be the starter after joining Pittsburgh in March, Fields, acquired via a trade with Chicago, has also made significant progress during training camp. Fields, who is accustomed to sudden changes in starting roles from his time in Chicago, emphasized the importance of staying prepared and being a team player regardless of his position on the depth chart.

Fields highlighted that the game plan remains consistent regardless of the starting quarterback, though his running prowess could offer a different dimension compared to Wilson’s style of play. The quarterbacks communicate regularly with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to tailor the plays to their strengths and preferences. Fields expressed confidence in Smith’s ability to make adjustments for either quarterback seamlessly.

The Steelers, under the guidance of coach Mike Tomlin, are navigating the uncertainty surrounding their quarterback situation with a focus on adapting to any changes before their season opener. Despite the challenges posed by Wilson’s injury, the team remains prepared to face the Falcons with either Wilson or Fields leading the offense.
