Spirit Airlines introduces new upscale fare options with additional amenities, departing from its traditional low-cost model.

Spirit Airlines is changing its approach from being known as a budget airline that charges numerous fees by introducing ticket options that include popular extras in one bundle. The airline, based in Florida, declared on Tuesday that it will offer various new ticket types, with the most inclusive being a package called “Go Big.” This premium ticket will feature priority check-in, a more spacious seat, snacks and beverages, a checked bag, a carry-on bag, and complimentary WiFi.

CEO Ted Christie stated that the modifications aim to elevate affordable travel to new levels but also reflect underlying issues with Spirit’s previous business model. Despite its iconic bright yellow planes, the airline has not recorded a full-year profit since 2019, accumulating losses of approximately $2.4 billion since then. Speculations are arising among industry analysts regarding a potential bankruptcy filing for Spirit in the future.

Major carriers like Delta and United dominate a significant portion of the U.S. airline industry’s profits by targeting premium travelers while also offering basic economy fares to compete with budget airlines like Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant for price-sensitive passengers. Christie mentioned, “We paid attention to feedback from our passengers and are thrilled to provide what they desire: options for an enhanced flying experience that are cost-effective and offer exceptional value.”
