Sources report that Timberwolves will trade Towns to Knicks for Randle, DiVincenzo, and first-round draft pick

The Minnesota Timberwolves have made a significant move in sending Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks as part of a franchise-altering deal. In exchange, the Timberwolves will receive Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round draft pick, according to a source familiar with the transaction that was reported by The Athletic. The deal has not been finalized at this time.

Towns, a four-time All-Star who has spent his entire career with the Timberwolves since being the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, has been a cornerstone for the team. Despite experiencing ups and downs over the years, including a run to the Western Conference finals last season, Towns had shown no signs of discontent with the organization. He has been actively involved in the Twin Cities community and was open to adapting his role on the team to accommodate young star Anthony Edwards.

The move to the Knicks comes as a surprise to Towns, particularly just days before the start of the training camp. However, it presents an opportunity for the 7-footer to return to his roots as he grew up in New Jersey. In return for Towns, the Timberwolves acquire All-Star power forward Randle, sharpshooter DiVincenzo, and a first-round draft pick. These additions will help offset some of the draft picks that were sent to Utah in a previous trade for center Rudy Gobert.

Tim Connelly, the president of basketball operations for the Timberwolves, has shown a willingness to make bold moves to improve the team. The acquisition of Randle and DiVincenzo, along with the draft pick, signals a strategic shift for the Timberwolves as they aim to elevate their performance in the playoffs. With strong competition in the Western Conference, the Timberwolves are gearing up for the challenge ahead.

This trade marks a significant moment in the Timberwolves’ franchise history, as they part ways with a key player in Towns in exchange for a package that aims to strengthen the team’s lineup. The outcome of this trade will shape the future trajectory of both the Timberwolves and the Knicks as they navigate the upcoming NBA season.
