SMU’s Kevin Jennings shines in the air as they secure a 34-27 victory over No. 22 Louisville

In a thrilling football match over the weekend, SMU emerged victorious over No. 22 Louisville with a score of 34-27. The Mustangs, with a record of 5-1, showcased an impressive performance with Kevin Jennings making a career-high of 281 passing yards and Isaiah Nwokobia’s crucial interception in the end zone sealing the win with 2:23 left in the game.
The game was a rollercoaster for both teams as SMU initially held a comfortable 24-13 lead by halftime. However, Louisville clawed their way back to tie the game at 27-all entering the fourth quarter. Louisville’s Ja’Corey Brooks and Donald Chaney Jr. played pivotal roles in their team’s comeback with standout performances.
Despite facing a tied score and the pressure mounting, SMU displayed resilience and composure during the final moments of the game. After a missed field goal and punt in the fourth quarter, SMU orchestrated a game-winning drive which culminated with LJ Johnson scoring a crucial touchdown with 6:39 remaining.
In a game filled with remarkable plays, Jennings’ 59-yard touchdown run, Roderick Daniels Jr.’s 5-yard run for a score, and Preston Stone’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Key’Shawn Smith were standout moments for the Mustangs.
On the defensive end, Nwokobia’s interception to seal the victory was a defining moment for SMU. Additionally, Jennings not only excelled in passing but also rushed for 113 yards on 10 carries, showcasing his versatility as a player.
Despite Louisville’s efforts, particularly Tyler Shough’s 329 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, they were unable to overcome SMU’s strong performance. Louisville’s decision to not kick on a fourth down inside SMU territory proved to be a costly error.
This win positions SMU favorably in conference play and potentially in the national rankings. Louisville, on the other hand, faces the challenge of bouncing back from their second consecutive loss.
Looking ahead, SMU will face Stanford on October 19 after a bye week, while Louisville will visit Virginia in their next game. The game was a testament to the competitive spirit and skill of both teams, leaving fans eager for more exciting matchups in the future.
