Thirty people hurt in ski lift incident at Pyrenees resort in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain — An accident at the Astún ski resort, located in the Pyrenees mountains of Spain, has left at least 30 individuals injured, according to emergency services in the northern Aragon region. On Saturday, regional authorities confirmed that ten of the injured required hospitalization, with two suffering serious injuries.

Reports indicate that approximately 80 people were trapped on the chairlifts shortly after the incident occurred. A witness described the scene to state television, stating that it appeared as if a cable had come loose, causing the chairs to bounce and some individuals to be thrown off.

Fernando Beltrán, a government representative for Aragon, later took to social media platform X to announce that all skiers affected by the accident had been safely evacuated, and that medical care was being provided to those in need.

The specific cause of the accident remains unclear, prompting an investigation into the incident. In response to the situation, several helicopters were dispatched to assist in rescuing those stranded and to transport the injured to local medical facilities.

Visuals shared on social media showcased scenes of multiple individuals lying in the snow beneath the ski lift, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock at the incident and conveyed his solidarity with the victims and their families. Meanwhile, the ski resort released a statement on X indicating that they were actively collaborating with emergency services and expressed their deep concern and support for those impacted by the accident.
