Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter lead Colorado to a 31-26 victory over NDSU in the second year under Deion Sanders

In Boulder, Colorado, Shedeur Sanders had an impressive performance, throwing for 445 yards and four touchdowns in Colorado’s 31-26 victory over North Dakota State as they kicked off Year 2 under coach Deion Sanders. Despite being favored by 10 1/2 points, the Buffaloes faced a tough challenge from North Dakota State, who scored late in the game to keep things interesting. Shedeur Sanders made a crucial play on third-and-8 with a long pass that drew a pass interference call, allowing Colorado to secure the win in the season opener. However, the team’s decision to pass on first down gave North Dakota State another chance to score, but they fell short with a play at the end zone with seconds remaining.

North Dakota State played methodically in the first half, keeping Heisman Trophy contender Shedeur Sanders and the Colorado offense at bay. Once Sanders hit the field, he showcased his skills, connecting with receivers like Jimmy Horn Jr., who had a stellar game with 198 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Travis Hunter, who caught three of Sanders’ touchdown passes. Hunter, who also played cornerback all night, displayed energy and skill that kept Colorado ahead in the game.

Sanders completed 26 of 34 passes with one interception and a high passer rating of 219.4. The Buffaloes’ offense relied heavily on the passing game, with minimal contribution from the rushing attack. Although the offensive line allowed only one sack, Sanders often found himself scrambling to make plays under pressure. The defense, led by new coordinator Robert Livingston, showed promise despite some weaknesses, allowing North Dakota State’s Cam Miller to score late in the game, though they held off the two-point conversion attempt.

North Dakota State, under new coach Tim Polasek, impressed with a strong first-half performance, leading 20-17 at halftime and demonstrating why they are ranked No. 2 in the FCS preseason polls. Despite the loss, North Dakota State remains a formidable team with a track record of competing well against FBS opponents.

Looking ahead, North Dakota State will face Tennessee State at home, while Colorado will hit the road to take on Nebraska in their upcoming games. The Buffaloes endured a tumultuous summer that saw controversies, including Coach Deion Sanders banning a Denver Post columnist from asking questions, but they managed to kick off the season with a hard-fought win against a tough opponent.
