Sex scandal rocks NYPD: Lieutenant recalls horrifying sex demands of ‘predator’ top cop Jeffrey Maddrey

The NYPD, the nation’s largest police force, is facing a seismic leadership shakeup as it grapples with a scandal involving its top brass and a growing crisis surrounding Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.

Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, abruptly resigned Friday night amid allegations of sexual misconduct. The move came just as the New York Post prepared to publish claims from a female subordinate, accusing Maddrey of demanding and receiving sexual favors in exchange for approving overtime at police headquarters in Manhattan.

Mayor’s Office, DA, and NYPD Respond

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into the allegations. “These are extremely serious and disturbing claims that allegedly occurred at NYPD headquarters,” said a spokesperson for the DA.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Maddrey’s resignation and pledged a thorough investigation. “The NYPD takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously,” the statement read.

A spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams said the city is “deeply disturbed” and emphasized the importance of rooting out abuses of power. The NYPD is conducting a department-wide review to ensure accountability among high-ranking officers.

Internal Affairs Bureau Chief Also Removed

The scandal prompted further action within the department. On Saturday, Tisch removed Chief Miguel Iglesias, head of the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, after he announced plans to retire. Iglesias’ removal underscores Tisch’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the department, she said.

Edward Thompson, a 38-year veteran, has been appointed interim chief of Internal Affairs. “The Internal Affairs Bureau must always be dedicated to preserving integrity and rooting out corruption,” Tisch stated.

New Leadership and Ongoing Turmoil

John Chell has been named acting Chief of Department to oversee the NYPD’s crime-fighting strategies and operational plans. Chell previously served as chief of patrol.

Maddrey’s resignation follows a tumultuous tenure marked by controversy. An oversight board previously recommended discipline against him for interfering in a 2021 arrest, but the case was dismissed by former Commissioner Edward Caban. Maddrey has also faced prior accusations of sexual harassment and gender discrimination, which he denied.

Mayor Adams’ Own Legal Battles

The scandal adds to the mounting troubles for Mayor Eric Adams, who is set to stand trial in April 2025 on federal corruption charges. Adams, who pleaded not guilty, has maintained his innocence. “If I am charged, I am innocent, and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength,” he said in a statement.

Several top city officials, including former Commissioner Caban, have resigned amid the federal probe, with some also facing criminal charges.

As the investigations unfold, the NYPD faces intense scrutiny over its leadership and commitment to upholding public trust. Lawyers for Maddrey and his accuser have not yet commented on the allegations.
