INDIANAPOLIS — Quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, leading contenders in this year’s NFL draft, have announced they will skip on-field workouts at this week’s NFL scouting combine.
This decision aligns with their earlier statements where they hinted at not participating in the drills scheduled for quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers at Lucas Oil Stadium. Their choice follows a growing pattern among top quarterbacks, joining the ranks of previous No. 1 picks like Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, and Joe Burrow who have also opted out of similar events.
Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward garnered attention through their collegiate careers, which boast significant on-field contributions. With more than 50 games started at various schools, both players have extensive game footage showcasing their skills.
Sanders breathed new life into Jackson State’s program in Mississippi before transitioning to Colorado, continuing his journey with his father, the legendary Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders. Meanwhile, Ward set a NCAA record with 158 touchdown passes across his stints at Incarnate Word in Texas, Washington State, and Miami.
The past season marked notable achievements for both players. Sanders was recognized as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, while Ward clinched the ACC Offensive Player of the Year title and secured a fourth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy race.
