Sacramento’s Temporary Athletics Ballpark to Include Hydration Feature for Summer Heat

A new artificial turf with a hydration component will be installed at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California, where the Oakland Athletics will play from 2025-2027 before moving to Las Vegas in 2028. The decision was made to combat the extreme summer heat in the region, with temperatures frequently reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The field will be converted from grass to synthetic turf to accommodate both the Athletics and the San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A River Cats, who will also utilize the ballpark.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred highlighted the importance of the new playing surface during a briefing with the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, emphasizing the inclusion of a hydration element to cool the field. The turf selection process involved input from MLB’s field and stadium consultant Murray Cook and the MLB Players Association.

While the turf has been chosen, the underlying infrastructure beneath it is still being finalized. This move aligns with a trend in MLB stadiums, with five out of 30 ballparks currently featuring artificial turf, primarily in stadiums with retractable roofs.

In addition to the new playing surface, plans for a new home clubhouse behind home plate are underway. The visiting clubhouse will remain in its current location beyond the outfield. The Athletics’ lease at the Coliseum expires after this season, prompting the team’s decision to relocate to Las Vegas.

Despite potential political challenges in Oakland, including a possible recall election of Mayor Sheng Thao, Manfred assured that the team’s move to Las Vegas would proceed as planned. The Athletics’ managing partner, John Fisher, will be responsible for securing additional financing for the new ballpark in Las Vegas, with discussions on supplemental financing expected at an upcoming meeting of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority Board.
