Running back CJ Baxter from Texas sustains season-ending knee injury during training camp, surgery needed

Texas Longhorns running back CJ Baxter will miss the 2024 season due to a knee injury sustained during practice, as reported by the team on Wednesday. The extent of Baxter’s injury necessitates surgery, although the school has not shared further details regarding the specific nature of the injury.
In the preceding season, Baxter made waves as the first Longhorn freshman tailback to start a season opener since Ricky Williams in 1995. However, his performance was hindered by rib and foot injuries in the initial two games, leading to him sitting out the third game. This absence provided an opportunity for Jonathon Brooks, who excelled by rushing for 1,139 yards before suffering a late-season knee ligament tear.
Despite facing setbacks, Baxter concluded the 2023 season with 659 rushing yards and five touchdowns, contributing to Texas’ Big 12 victory and securing the team’s inaugural College Football Playoff berth. As Texas transitions to the Southeastern Conference this season, they are scheduled to face Colorado State on August 31st.
