Royal health crises as King Charles III will have prostate procedure – while Kate recovers from abdominal surgery

King Charles III and the Princess of Wales are currently facing medical challenges, leading to the postponement of their previously scheduled public engagements in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, Buckingham Palace revealed that King Charles III will undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate next week. The palace assured the public that the king’s condition is benign. Simultaneously, the office of the Princess of Wales, Kate, announced that she would be staying at a private hospital in London for up to two weeks after undergoing planned abdominal surgery. Kate, formerly known as Kate Middleton, is the wife of Prince William, the heir to the throne.

While it is not common for members of the royal family to disclose health details, the coordinated announcements aim to prevent speculation if events involving Charles or Kate need to be rescheduled or canceled in the coming weeks.

The publicity surrounding the king’s surgery serves as an opportunity to encourage other men to prioritize their health by having their prostates checked, aligning with public health advice. The palace emphasized that the 75-year-old monarch sought treatment, echoing the common experience of thousands of men each year.

Enlarged prostate, a condition common in men over 50, affects urinary functions and is generally not a serious health threat. It is not cancerous and does not elevate the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Recent years have seen heightened media focus on the health of Britain’s senior royals, initially as Queen Elizabeth II withdrew from public view in the last months of her 70-year reign and later when Charles assumed the throne at an age when most peers would have long retired.

Several events on the monarch’s schedule have been postponed, including plans for foreign dignitaries and members of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet to travel to Dumfries House in Scotland.

Kate, 42, was admitted to The London Clinic on Tuesday. While her office at Kensington Palace didn’t provide additional details, it clarified that her condition was non-cancerous. Despite her generally good health, Kate had previously been hospitalized while pregnant due to severe morning sickness.

Expressing apologies for the disruption of upcoming engagements, Kate stated that she would not resume public duties until after Easter. Kensington Palace emphasized Kate’s desire for privacy in her personal medical information and her wish to maintain normalcy for her children.

Since Prince Harry and Meghan’s move to California in 2020, the Prince and Princess of Wales have strengthened their standing as among the most popular members of the royal family.
