In Bucharest, Romania, legal authorities have initiated a probe into the political activities of Calin Georgescu, a far-right figure who advanced in a disrupted presidential race last year. This inquiry arises from allegations concerning irregularities in election funding and sympathies towards fascist entities, among other charges.
On Wednesday, law enforcement intercepted Georgescu’s vehicle in Bucharest, detaining him for further questioning. Following this, prosecutors proceeded with formal charges, citing suspicions of instigating actions that challenge the constitutional framework, distributing misinformation, and submitting false statements concerning electoral finances and asset declarations.
The Constitutional Court had previously voided the election just days before the anticipated runoff on December 8, triggered by Georgescu’s unexpected lead. Despite his initial low polling figures, Georgescu reported no campaign expenditure. Speculations and accusations soon emerged, involving Russian meddling and breaches of electoral protocols.
Officials allege he has also been involved with the establishment or endorsement of organizations with fascist, racist, or anti-Semitic ideologies, and has venerated war criminals and extremist doctrines. Despite denying any illicit activities, Georgescu took to social media to claim that authorities fabricated evidence to justify electoral manipulation and hinder his renewed presidential ambitions. He urged his following to participate in a protest rally scheduled in Bucharest.
A sizable crowd demonstrated outside the prosecutor’s office, brandishing Romanian flags and chanting slogans of support for Georgescu, including “Free Georgescu!” and “President Georgescu!” Meanwhile, Romania’s Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, emphasized on social media that the legal system operates independently and enforces the law without prejudice.
On Saturday, thousands of protestors assembled in the capital, persuaded by Georgescu’s assertions that the annulment of the election lacked legal and constitutional validity. The replay of the election is set for May 4, with a potential runoff on May 18 if no contender secures a majority vote. Georgescu’s eligibility to partake in the upcoming election remains uncertain.
In conjunction with Georgescu’s interrogation, law enforcement executed 47 searches across five Romanian counties, targeting individuals associated with Georgescu. The accusations against these individuals involve fraudulent declarations about campaign financing sources, unlicensed weapon possession, and forming organizations with fascist, racist, or xenophobic intent.
Georgescu has courted controversy in the past, having extolled Romanian fascist and nationalist figures from the early 20th century as national icons. Additionally, his commendation of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a patriotic leader and portrayal of Ukraine as a fictitious nation has drawn criticism.
The American political landscape has also taken notice, with current U.S. administration expressing disapproval of Romania’s annulled election. Vice President JD Vance has remarked that the court’s decision stemmed from insubstantial concerns and overwhelming influence from neighboring nations.
