In recent developments, renowned musician Rhiannon Giddens has joined a growing list of artists stepping away from engagements at the Kennedy Center, following significant leadership changes ignited by former President Donald Trump’s interference. The recent upheaval has fostered controversy, coalescing around Trump’s broader critique against what he identifies as ‘woke’ culture.
Giddens, celebrated for her diverse musical prowess and Grammy-winning collaborations with Francesco Turrisi, announced via social media her decision to cancel her upcoming performance. Originally scheduled for May 11, 2025, at the Kennedy Center, her show will instead be held at The Anthem, a venue also in Washington, D.C. She explained that the booking had been made long before the current contentious changes at the Kennedy Center.
A pivotal figure in roots music, Giddens’ acclaim extends to collaborations with the Carolina Chocolate Drops and her contribution to the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera “Omar.” Her extensive accomplishments have earned her a MacArthur “Genius” grant, further cementing her status in the music industry.
Giddens is not alone in her decision to dissociate from the Kennedy Center. Actor Issa Rae, author Louise Penny, and the band Low Cut Connie have similarly withdrawn from their scheduled events. Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Victoria Clark proceeded with her performance on February 15, using the opportunity to express her disapproval by wearing a shirt emblazoned with “ANTI TRUMP AF.”
The Kennedy Center, supported by both government funding and private contributions, serves as a cultural hub featuring a wide array of artistic venues including a concert hall, opera house, and theater. Its longstanding tradition of inclusivity has recently been overshadowed by the current political climate, which has seen a shift in its public perception. Traditionally, serving presidents have participated in the center’s events, regardless of their personal politics with attending artists.
