Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who stepped down from the throne earlier this year, is currently in the hospital

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who surprised many by abdicating earlier this year, has been taken to a hospital after a fall at her home, as reported by Danish media on Thursday. The 84-year-old queen was admitted to a hospital in the Danish capital for observation after the incident at Fredensborg Castle, north of Copenhagen, according to the royal house.

“The queen is doing well considering the circumstances, but will be kept under observation for the time being,” said the head of communications, Lene Balleby. There were no additional details provided by the royal household.

Queen Margrethe was expected to attend an event on Friday, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University, but her appearance has been called off. The Queen had pursued prehistoric archaeology studies at Copenhagen University and had expressed her interest in archaeology if she had not been the monarch of Denmark.

In January, Queen Margrethe made history by becoming the first Danish monarch to abdicate in almost 900 years, passing the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. Despite previously indicating she would not step down, health issues, including back problems, compelled her to make the difficult decision. In her New Year’s message, she acknowledged the toll time had taken on her and announced her intention to step down, surprising the kingdom.
