Pushed Over Cliff in Hawaii: Doctor’s Wife Faces Attacker in Court

Key Points Summary

  • Survivor Returns to Court: Arielle Konig appeared with visible injuries to request an extended restraining order.
  • Doctor Faces Attempted Murder Charges: Her husband allegedly beat her, injected her, and tried to push her off a cliff.
  • Alleged Motive Uncovered: Konig accused Arielle of infidelity and reportedly displayed controlling behavior for months.
  • Case Sparks Outrage: Advocates say this is another case of domestic violence hidden behind success and status.

Arielle Konig Appears Bruised but Composed

Arielle Konig made her first public appearance since her husband allegedly tried to kill her during a hike in Hawaii. After being pushed over a cliff in Hawaii, she entered a Maui courtroom Friday wearing a headscarf and a bandage over her right eye.

The 36-year-old nuclear engineer showed little emotion as she faced Dr. Gerhardt Konig via video link from an Oahu jail. She asked the court to extend the restraining order already in place.

The judge approved the request, barring Konig from contacting Arielle or their children if he posts bail.

Violent Attack at Scenic Lookout Shocks Community

The horrifying attack happened in March at the Nu?uanu Pali Lookout, a popular tourist spot perched over 1,000 feet above Oahu’s coastline.

Prosecutors said Dr. Konig struck Arielle with closed fists and a rock. He allegedly tried to push her off the cliff and injected her with unknown substances using syringes.

She suffered severe head and facial injuries and was rushed to the hospital after nearby hikers called 911. A six-hour manhunt ended with police arresting Konig near the Pali Highway following a brief foot chase.

Abuse Claims Emerge in Court Filings

In her court filing, Arielle accused Konig of long-term emotional and physical abuse. She said he frequently accused her of cheating and had sexually assaulted her.

Police said the assault began after she refused to take a photo with him at the scenic overlook. The moment reportedly triggered Konig’s rage, leading to the brutal encounter.

Her calm demeanor in court stood in stark contrast to the horror she survived.

Pushed over Cliff in Hawaii: Doctor’s Career and Life Under Scrutiny

Konig once served as an assistant professor of anesthesiology and bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2022, he moved to Maui with Arielle and their children after landing what he called his “dream job.”

They settled into a $1.5 million home. But beneath the surface, prosecutors say, the couple’s marriage had dark undercurrents.

Maui Health has suspended Konig from medical duty pending further investigation. His license remains active but under review.

Friends Stunned by Allegations

Friends and former colleagues said the couple appeared happy and low-key. Staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center described Konig as quiet and respectful.

But domestic violence experts say appearances often hide the truth. “Abuse doesn’t discriminate,” said Sanoe Ka?aihue, executive director of Women Helping Women. “We’re seeing more premeditated and deadly partner violence.”

Ka?aihue added that recent cases on Maui show a disturbing trend. “Doctors, engineers, high-income professionals—it makes no difference,” she said. “It’s about control, not class.”

Criminal Case Moves Forward

The Pushed Over Cliff in Hawaii case has gripped the public with its mix of violence, betrayal, and heartbreak. The criminal trial is set to begin in June, while the next court hearing is scheduled for May.

For now, Arielle continues recovering while raising her children—and preparing to testify against the man she once trusted most.
