The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Francis is battling a respiratory infection characterized by a “complex clinical picture,” necessitating an extended hospital stay. As concerns mount regarding the health of the 88-year-old pontiff, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni revealed that tests conducted recently indicate that Francis is suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection. This type of infection involves a combination of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, prompting a significant adjustment in his medication since his hospitalization last Friday.

At this point, the pope’s hospitalization has surpassed the length of a previous stay in 2023 due to pneumonia. Bruni noted that Francis’ symptoms complicate his clinical picture, thereby requiring an appropriate duration of hospitalization. As of the latest update on Monday, Bruni described the pope’s condition as “stationary,” adding that he had resumed some light work and reading activities during his hospital stay.

Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having undergone partial lung removal from an infection in his youth, making him susceptible to seasonal bronchitis. He was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital in “fair” condition after a bronchitis episode worsened. Following a diagnosis of a respiratory tract infection, doctors advised “absolute rest” and implemented various drug therapies, with updates suggesting that the pope’s mild fever had subsided, stabilizing his overall condition.

On Monday, Bruni reported that Francis managed to have breakfast, read newspapers, and even received the Eucharist after passing another peaceful night. In a show of continuity in his responsibilities, he maintained his routine of daily video calls with the parish priest in Gaza, Father Gabriel Romanelli, despite his condition. Romanelli mentioned that while the pope’s voice seemed fatigued, it was clear, allowing for an effective communication exchange in the midst of the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Bronchitis, defined as inflammation of the air passages, can present minor challenges for healthy individuals but can escalate in severity for the elderly or those with existing lung problems. In patients unable to effectively cough up mucus, it can lead to bacterial colonization, exacerbating the illness and complicating treatment. Expert Dr. Maor Sauler emphasized the risk factors associated with age and conditions like bronchitis, indicating that recovery may pose additional difficulties due to the pope’s fragile state.

With age, the immune system experiences a decline, raising concerns for doctors when older patients face multiple health issues, particularly respiratory conditions. Factors such as decreased lung function and weakened muscle strength contribute to a heightened vulnerability to severe infections, such as pneumonia.

Pope Francis, known for his relentless work ethic, has been coping with numerous health issues, including severe respiratory infections. He relies on mobility aids like a wheelchair and cane due to complications from chronic knee problems. Furthermore, he underwent significant surgeries in 2021 and 2023 to address intestinal issues and abdominal hernias, which have further strained his health. In a previous instance of pneumonia last year, he spent only three days in the hospital despite arriving in a distressed condition.

Some public appearances had to be canceled due to the extended hospitalization of Pope Francis, complicating the Vatican’s schedule for Holy Year activities. The official Vatican calendar lists no appointments for February and resumes on March 5, Ash Wednesday. The pope’s ongoing treatment has led to the cancellation of the upcoming weekly general audience.
