Pope takes a break on the 10th day of hospital stay due to initial signs of kidney failure detected.

ROME — Pope Francis was reported to be resting on Monday morning after a calm night, marking the 10th day of his hospitalization due to a complicated lung infection that has led to the early stages of kidney failure, according to information from the Vatican.

The brief statement did not clarify if the 88-year-old pontiff had regained consciousness. It noted, “The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting.”

On Sunday evening, the medical team revealed that blood tests indicated early kidney failure; however, they assured that the situation was being managed. Although Francis is still in critical condition, he has not faced any severe respiratory issues since Saturday.

Currently, he is receiving high levels of supplemental oxygen and was reported to be alert and responsive during Sunday’s Mass. Medical professionals have stated that his prognosis remains cautiously optimistic.

Given the pope’s age and underlying health issues, his condition is precarious. Doctors have expressed concern that the primary danger is sepsis, a severe infection that could develop as a complication from pneumonia. So far, the Vatican’s medical updates have not indicated any signs of sepsis.

Monday marks a significant milestone for Francis as it equals the length of his longest hospitalization as pope. He spent a similar duration in Rome’s Gemelli hospital in 2021 following the removal of over a foot of his colon.

Updates on the pope’s health continue to be closely monitored, reflecting the concerns of the public and the global community regarding his well-being.
