Police officer kills armed man on Indiana university grounds when suspect fails to obey orders

A man was fatally shot by a police officer on the Purdue University Fort Wayne campus in northeastern Indiana after the individual did not comply with police instructions. The incident led to the closure of the campus for the rest of the day. The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Chief Scott Caudill confirmed that the man was pronounced dead at the scene, although his identity remained undisclosed by authorities by the following afternoon, and it was unclear which department the officer belonged to who fired the fatal shot.

According to Caudill, the Fort Wayne police were contacted by the DeKalb County Community Corrections office for assistance in locating a man who had not returned to their custody. It was reported that the man might be armed with a handgun and could be on the Purdue-Fort Wayne campus. Subsequently, officers from Fort Wayne and the campus located the armed individual on the premises. Despite repeated commands, the suspect did not respond, leading to the fatal shooting at 7:48 a.m.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Fort Wayne police, Indiana State Police, Purdue University Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County prosecutors, and the county coroner. Further details and clarifications on the incident were not immediately available, as messages left for the Fort Wayne police spokesperson by The Associated Press were not returned as of Tuesday.
