Polar Vortex unleashes dangerous 1500 miles long ice and snow storm

A powerful winter storm is set to sweep across vast parts of the United States from Sunday night into Monday, fueled by the chilling effects of the “Polar Vortex.”

This weather phenomenon occurs when Arctic air masses, typically trapped in the polar region, break free due to a disruption in the jet stream and surge deep into the southern and eastern parts of the U.S.

Freezing Rain Threatens the South

The southern regions, spanning from Oklahoma to Virginia, face the risk of dangerous freezing rain. Experts warn of potential traffic chaos and widespread power outages as icy conditions grip these areas.

Heavy Snowfall Hits the North

Further north, areas like the Appalachian Mountains could see up to half a meter of fresh snow. Even major cities such as New York are bracing for significant snowfall, which could bring travel and daily life to a standstill.

The Main Danger: Bone-Chilling Cold

The most pressing threat, however, remains the brutal cold. Frost warnings have been issued for regions home to about 230 million Americans. In the Midwest, temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -20°C.

A Winter Chill That Lingers

According to Axios, the duration of this cold snap is especially concerning. Experts predict it could endure far longer than usual, potentially making this one of the harshest winters the U.S. has seen in years.
