One of the Remaining GOP Congressmen Who Supported Trump’s Impeachment Progresses in Washington’s US House Race

In the Washington state’s 4th Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse is heading to the general election seeking a sixth term. Newhouse, one of the few House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump, secured a spot in the November election. He will face Jerrod Sessler, a Navy veteran and former NASCAR driver, who was endorsed by Trump.

Sessler, who came in fourth in the previous primary against Newhouse, expressed confidence this time around. Endorsed by the Washington State Republican Party and Trump, Sessler believes the support he received is significant. He revealed a text from Trump urging him to fight for a pro-Constitution and pro-MAGA agenda, aiming to mend the nation from the current administration’s challenges.

Newhouse, a third-generation farmer, has avoided directly engaging in discussions about Trump and instead has concentrated on themes like agriculture and border security, crucial issues in Washington’s diverse district. With notable endorsements from the NRA and the National Right to Life, Newhouse has a substantial campaign fund, having raised $1.6 million compared to Sessler’s $409,000.

The primary race also featured Tiffany Smiley, a former nurse who received Trump’s endorsement just three days before the election, along with support from voters. However, it is suggested that the backing might not have influenced numerous voters in the primarily mail-in ballot state. Despite the unique circumstances, Smiley was not among the top vote-getters, with Newhouse and Sessler ultimately advancing to the general election in November.

The Washington state primary allows the top two candidates from any party to advance to the general election, irrespective of party affiliation. Newhouse and Sessler will now prepare for the upcoming election to secure the seat in the 4th Congressional District.
