Global population expected to reach 8.09 billion by New Year’s Day, marking a 71 million rise in 2024.

The global population saw an increase of over 71 million in 2024, reaching approximately 8.09 billion on the first day of the new year, as per estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau released on Monday.

This marks a growth rate of 0.9% for 2024, which is a slight decline from the previous year, when the population rose by 75 million. Projections for January 2025 indicate that there will be around 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths occurring every second across the globe.

In the United States, the population expanded by 2.6 million people, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year’s Day, according to the Census data.

The estimates suggest that the U.S. will experience one birth every nine seconds and one death approximately every 9.4 seconds in January 2025. Additionally, international migration is anticipated to contribute to the U.S. population growth by adding one person every 23.2 seconds. Overall, the interplay of births, deaths, and net migration will yield a net increase of one individual every 21.2 seconds in the country, as noted by the Census Bureau.

During the current decade of the 2020s, the U.S. population has already grown by nearly 9.7 million, reflecting a growth rate of 2.9%. In contrast, the population growth from 2010 to 2019 was recorded at 7.4%, marking the lowest expansion rate since the 1930s.
