A wave of controversy surrounding the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony has escalated into a legal matter, with DJ Barbara Butch announcing that her lawyer is taking action against the torrent of threats and abuse she has faced online since her performance. Butch’s lawyer revealed in a letter on her Instagram that she has received death threats, torture threats, and rape threats, in addition to facing anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and derogatory remarks. Butch’s agent has confirmed the authenticity of the Instagram post.
The ceremony’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, has clarified that the show was not influenced by “The Last Supper,” despite critics interpreting a segment featuring Butch as a parody of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting depicting Jesus Christ and his disciples. Butch, known as a “love activist,” sported a silver headdress resembling a halo while energizing the audience during her performance, surrounded by drag artists, dancers, and others.
Criticism from various quarters, including French Catholic bishops, surfaced, claiming that Christian sentiments were offended. Organizers of the Paris Olympics have maintained that the ceremony was not intended to disrespect any religious group but rather celebrate community tolerance. Jolly described the moment as a celebration of diversity and the table where Butch performed as a nod to communal feasting and French cuisine.
In response to the backlash, Butch’s lawyer Audrey Msellati announced plans to file multiple complaints, citing a campaign of cyberbullying and defamation against Butch. Msellati indicated that irrespective of the perpetrators’ nationality, legal action will be pursued against any future attempts to intimidate Butch. Butch herself expressed resilience in a statement on Instagram, asserting her existence, pride in her identity, and ownership of her artistic decisions.
Butch concluded her statement by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the ceremony and emphasized her commitment to her identity and the joy she experienced. The legal complaints will be made to safeguard Butch from further harassment and to uphold her right to artistic expression.
