Obama Opposed Harris in 2024: Didn’t Believe She Could Win

A new book shows that Barack Obama didn’t think Kamala Harris could win the 2024 presidential election. This came after Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Obama, who had been president before Biden, didn’t believe Harris was the right choice for the Democrats. He thought there was someone better. His doubts became a big issue behind the scenes, as Obama opposed her candidacy.

Obama Pushed for a Different Strategy

Instead of supporting Harris as the nominee, Obama wanted a different approach. He didn’t think Harris could win the election, so Obama opposed her becoming the nominee. Obama argued for an open convention. He also suggested having a mini-primary to pick the best candidate. His main goal was to stop Harris from becoming the automatic nominee. Obama felt the party needed a fresh start, not just a new leader who might struggle.

Behind-the-Scenes Actions Against Harris

Obama didn’t just express his doubts. He took real steps to make sure Harris wasn’t the nominee. He worked hard to prevent her from taking over. Obama set up meetings with key figures like Congressman James Clyburn. On the day Joe Biden handed off the baton to Harris, Obama set up a call with Clyburn. He wanted to make sure that Harris wouldn’t be seen as the only choice. Clyburn, sensing this, quickly endorsed Harris to end the discussion that Obama opposed.

Support from Obama Came Later

After all the behind-the-scenes drama, Obama eventually changed his mind. He and Michelle Obama both gave their full support to Harris. Five days after Biden stepped aside, Obama publicly endorsed Harris. He praised her and said she would be a great President. Obama’s support came in the form of a video showing a phone call between the two. He made it clear that he believed in her leadership, despite having opposed her initially.

A Shift in Obama’s Position

Obama’s stance on Kamala Harris changed over time. At first, he worked against her. Then, he gave her his full backing. This shift shows the complexity of political support. It also highlights the behind-the-scenes struggles that can shape an election. While Obama didn’t initially believe Harris could win, his support later played a significant role in her campaign.
